What are Naturopaths?
Naturopaths are health practitioners who apply natural therapies and Naturopathic Medicine to support their patients to improve their health and wellness, reduce common ailments, and overcome illness and disease. They often integrate functional medicine and preventative medicine into their practice.
Naturopathic Medicine is a health science system that uses natural remedies to help the body heal itself. Naturopathy can include a range of treatments such as herbal medicine, western herbal medicine, nutrition, advice on lifestyle, Iridology, water therapy and homeopathy, and many Naturopaths practice their own combination of these treatments.

They are able to support men’s, women’s, and children’s health. By treating the whole person and addressing the root causes of their health conditions, Naturopathy aims to support the restoration of health and promote well-being in a manner that is complementary to their patient’s traditional medical treatment.

Testing (optional but may be recommended)
Blood Tests, Stool Sample, SIBO Test, DNA Testing, Hormone Testing, Food Intolerance Testing. These diagnostic testing methods help identify underlying health issues and inform naturopathic practice, and the results of these tests can be used to provide education to the patients. Tests may include:
- Blood Tests – either through your GP or privately (in which case your Naturopath will give you a Pathology Request Form)
- Stool Sample
- SIBO Test
- DNA Testing (including Methylation)
- Hormone Testing with DUTCH Complete Test
- Food Intolerance Testing for Adults (IgG) – 96 Foods
- Food Intolerance Testing for Child (including blood draw) – 96 Foods
- Food Allergy and Intolerance Testing for Adults (IgG/IgA) – 96 Foods
Our pricing is subject to change – if the supplier charges extra for your test kit or postage we will ask you to pay that extra. We will keep you informed of any changes.
How it works is that you pay for the test kit at the end of your appointment. We then send away for the test kit to the supplier, and ask them to deliver the kit to your home address. You take the test in accordance with the supplier’s instructions, and then you post the used samples or specimens back to the supplier. The supplier will send us your test results when they are ready, and we will let you know if you haven’t already booked an appointment.
Please note that for compliance reasons, we are not able to provide your test results to you without you attending a Naturopath Test Results Consultation, as your Naturopath will need to interpret your results and identify the best way forward after that.
We are unfortunately unable to influence the speed of the test results arriving, so we do not offer a refund for test results that “take too long”. On average, you may need to wait 3 or 4 weeks to receive your test result. We regularly check in with the supplier on your behalf to see whether your results have arrived.
Supplements and Herbal Medicine (optional but may be recommended)
Nutritional supplements and practitioner-approved liquid herbs or botanical medicines may be recommended to support your health condition. These are part of complementary medicine to enhance your Wellness Plan.
Your Naturopath may recommend that you start taking particular Practitioner-Approved Supplements and/or Liquid Herbs to help support your health condition(s).
We are likely to have these in our lovely Wavell Heights and Cannon Hill Clinic, but we do sometimes need to order them in for you (in which case we will ask for payment up front and will request that you pay for postage to your house if you are not picking them up from the Clinic).
We have recently substantially reduced the prices of all our supplements to make them more affordable for you.

FAQs
1. What is Naturopathic medicine?
Naturopathic medicine is a holistic way of looking at the body and treating its symptoms to address health issues. Naturopaths will take a full medical history, carry out functional testing, and consider whole health in diagnosing conditions. It involves traditional medicine, complementary therapies, and natural treatments.
2. What are Naturopathic doctors?
Naturopathic doctors is not a term used in Australia. Overseas, Naturopathic doctors or naturopathic medical doctors earn ND or NMD degrees from a naturopathic medical school. Naturopathic doctors or Naturopathic physicians hold a medical degree, with a specialty in Naturopathy.
A professional practising in Australia is called a Naturopath or a Naturopathic Practitioner. They focus on complementary therapies to support health, but are not medical doctors. Naturopaths often work in private practice and aim to improve individual health through natural medicine. To become a Naturopathic Doctor, a Naturopath would need to study a separate medical degree – it would be more often in Australia to be called an Integrative GP or a Functional GP, however, rather than a Naturopathic Doctor.
3. What are Naturopathic Physicians?
Naturopaths in Australia are not typically physicians or doctors. They practice in complementary medicine and Western herbal medicine. They do not perform minor surgeries but may focus on lifestyle counselling and dietary advice. Evidence-based approaches ensure safe and effective care.
4. What ongoing professional development must Naturopaths carry out?
Naturopaths at Brisbane Livewell Clinic are members of professional associations and engage in ongoing professional development, scientific research and considerations of public health, and clinical practice in complementary medicine and nutritional supplements. This ensures they provide evidence-based care and maintain the highest standards for public health. The ongoing professional development helps Naturopaths stay updated with the latest evidence-based practices in natural medicine. Practitioners adhere to a minimum standard of education and training to deliver effective health care. In turn, their associations often provide support and member benefits.
