Understanding Your DNA - DNA Testing Naturopath Brisbane

DNA and methylation testing identifies genetic variants that affect how your body processes nutrients, hormones and environmental compounds. Our Naturopaths use this testing when symptoms suggest a genetic driver.

What is Methylation and Why Does It Matter

Methylation is a biochemical process that affects gene expression, detoxification, hormone metabolism, neurotransmitter production and immune regulation. The MTHFR gene variant is the most commonly tested methylation variant and affects folate metabolism with clinical relevance for energy, mood, cardiovascular health and pregnancy outcomes. Our Naturopaths assess methylation status as part of a broader clinical picture rather than in isolation.

What DNA Testing Involves

DNA testing at Brisbane Livewell Clinic is conducted using a saliva sample taken at home or in Clinic. Results are reviewed at a dedicated DNA Testing and Wellness Plan Consultation, where your Naturopath explains what the findings mean in the context of your symptoms and designs a personalised natural treatment Wellness Plan based on the results.

When DNA Testing Is Most Useful

DNA and methylation testing is particularly relevant for patients with persistent fatigue, mood disorders, recurrent pregnancy loss, cardiovascular risk factors, autoimmune conditions and symptoms that have not responded to standard natural treatment protocols. Your Naturopath will advise whether DNA testing is clinically indicated at your initial consultation.

What Happens After Testing

Results are reviewed at a 90-minute DNA Testing and Wellness Plan Consultation ($220). Your Naturopath explains each finding in plain language, identifies the highest-priority interventions and designs a Wellness Plan using targeted nutritional supplements and dietary modifications based on your specific genetic profile.

DNA testing and methylation support at Brisbane Livewell Clinic is provided through our naturopathic team. Visit our Naturopath Brisbane page to see all Practitioners, fees and appointment types.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are the questions we hear most often, and our practitioners will answer any follow-up enquiries as soon as possible.

What is MTHFR and should I be tested?
MTHFR is a gene that produces an enzyme involved in processing folate. Common variants in this gene reduce enzyme efficiency and affect folate metabolism, homocysteine levels and a range of downstream health processes. Your Naturopath will advise whether MTHFR testing is clinically indicated based on your symptoms and health history.
Can DNA testing help explain why standard treatments have not worked for me?
DNA and methylation testing can reveal why certain nutritional interventions have not produced the expected response, by identifying genetic variants that affect nutrient absorption, detoxification and biochemical processing. It is most useful when standard pathology and natural treatment have not provided a clear explanation for ongoing symptoms.
How is DNA testing different from a standard blood test?
Standard blood tests measure what is circulating in the blood at the time of the test. DNA testing measures fixed genetic variants that are present throughout your life. The results do not change. They reveal underlying tendencies in how your body functions rather than a snapshot of current levels.
What is the cost of DNA testing with methylation?
The DNA Testing and Methylation Wellness Plan Consultation is 90 minutes and costs $220. The DNA test itself is an additional laboratory cost. Your Naturopath will advise on current laboratory fees at your initial consultation.
