The Physiology of Anxiety

Anxiety is not a purely psychological condition. Elevated cortisol from adrenal dysregulation produces anxiety-like symptoms independently of psychological triggers. Poor methylation affects serotonin and dopamine synthesis. Low GABA activity, magnesium deficiency and elevated homocysteine all have direct effects on the nervous system. Our Naturopaths investigate these physiological drivers before recommending any natural treatment.

Chronic Stress and Adrenal Function

The adrenal glands produce cortisol and adrenaline in response to stress. Sustained high-demand stress leads to dysregulated cortisol patterns, contributing to poor sleep, poor recovery, irritability, sugar cravings and immune vulnerability. Our Naturopaths assess cortisol patterns using DUTCH testing where clinically indicated and prescribe adaptogenic herbal medicine to support HPA axis regulation.

The Gut-Brain Axis and Mental Wellbeing

Approximately 90% of serotonin is produced in the gut. Gut dysbiosis, poor short-chain fatty acid production and intestinal permeability all affect neurotransmitter availability and mood regulation. Our Naturopaths address the gut as a primary target in anxiety presentations where a gut-brain connection is evident.

Sleep and Nervous System Recovery

Poor sleep perpetuates anxiety. Elevated evening cortisol, low melatonin precursors and magnesium deficiency all impair sleep architecture. Our Naturopaths assess the physiological contributors to poor sleep and prescribe targeted nutritional and herbal natural treatment to support nervous system recovery during sleep.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are the questions we hear most often, and our practitioners will answer any follow-up enquiries as soon as possible.

Can a Naturopath help with anxiety?
A Naturopath investigates the physiological contributors to anxiety including nutrient deficiencies, cortisol dysregulation, gut-brain axis function and methylation. Our Naturopaths address these physical drivers and work alongside any psychological support a patient is already receiving.
Does seeing a Naturopath replace seeing a psychologist or counsellor?
Naturopathic care addresses the physiological contributors to mental health. It works alongside psychological support rather than replacing it. Our Naturopaths will refer to or work in parallel with a Counsellor or psychologist where appropriate.
What tests does a Naturopath use for anxiety and stress?
Testing is ordered where it will change the treatment direction. Common tests include DUTCH testing for cortisol patterns, comprehensive blood panels including B vitamins and magnesium, and DNA methylation testing where a methylation variant is suspected.
Can a Naturopath help with insomnia related to anxiety?
Naturopathic natural treatment for anxiety-related insomnia addresses elevated evening cortisol, low melatonin precursors and magnesium deficiency. Your Naturopath will assess the specific pattern of your sleep disruption before prescribing.
