Find a Dietitian: Your Guide to Accessing Nutritional Expertise in Australia
Embarking on a journey towards better health can be both exciting and a bit daunting, particularly when it involves food changes and finding the right dietitian. Understanding the role of a dietitian and the steps to find one is crucial for achieving your health goals.
Understanding the Role of a Dietitian
What exactly does a dietitian do? Dietitians are professionals with expertise in food and nutrition. They are not only knowledgeable about what to eat but also understand the science behind how food impacts your body and overall health. Dietitians in Australia are required to have rigorous academic and practical training, holding university degrees in nutrition and dietetics and being accredited by recognized bodies such as the Dietitians Association of Australia (DAA).
This sets dietitians apart from nutritionists. While nutritionists also focus on food and health, dietitians are uniquely qualified to handle more clinical and specific dietary needs. They can craft personalised nutrition plans, particularly if you have specific health conditions like diabetes, heart disease, or gastrointestinal disorders.
Why You Might Need a Dietitian
People seek the expertise of dietitians for various reasons. Whether you’re struggling with weight management, dealing with a chronic condition, or looking to enhance your sports performance, a dietitian can provide tailored advice and support.
How to Find a Dietitian in Australia
Finding the right dietitian in Australia can be done through two main methods: privately or through a GP referral with an Enhanced Primary Care Plan (EPC).
1. Finding a Dietitian Privately
You can directly book a consultation with an Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD) like Cherry Lam at Brisbane Livewell Clinic. Cherry is highly qualified and offers personalised nutrition advice tailored to your health needs. Whether you need help with managing a medical condition or simply want to improve your overall diet, Cherry can assist you. Learn more about Cherry Lam and our dietitian services.
2. Finding a Dietitian Through Your GP
Another way to find a dietitian is through your Doctor or General Practitioner (GP). This process ensures that you receive Dietetic care as part of a coordinated approach to your overall health management.
Your GP can prepare a Chronic Disease Management Plan (CDM) (which used to be called an Enhanced Primary Care (EPC) Plan), which allows you to access a specific number of Allied Health Services, including Dietetics, under Medicare.
If you wish to see Cherry Lam as your Dietician, you can ask your GP to include her details in your CDM/EPC. The CDM/EPC is then sent to Brisbane Livewell Clinic by your GP, and our team will contact you to book a consultation with Cherry. You can also contact Brisbane Livewell Clinic on (07) 3861 5881 and book a CDM/EPC Consultation with our friendly Reception staff.
What is an Enhanced Primary Care Plan (EPC)?
An Enhanced Primary Care Plan (EPC), now known as a Chronic Disease Management (CDM) Plan, allows patients with chronic conditions to access a limited number of Medicare-subsidised visits to allied health professionals, including dietitians. Your GP can assess your eligibility and include specific health professionals in your plan.
Learn more about how a Chronic Disease Management Plan (CDM) works
Once your CDM is prepared, it covers up to five visits per calendar year to Allied Health services.
You may be eligible to get a CDM Plan if you have a chronic or terminal medical condition. This is defined as a medical condition which is present or is likely to be present for 6 months or longer or is terminal.
You can check your eligibility and claiming conditions in the MBS items online checker in HPOS. You can also call Medicare.
To use your CDM Plan for Dietitian services, your GP will need to specify a referral to an Accredited Practising Dietitian like Cherry Lam in your CDM. The referral includes Cherry’s details, and once the EPC is in place, Brisbane Livewell Clinic will reach out to schedule your consultations.
Preparing for Your First Appointment
After booking your first appointment, it’s helpful to prepare. Consider your health goals and any specific issues you wish to address. Keeping a food diary before your appointment can provide valuable insights for both you and your dietitian.
During the consultation, expect to discuss your dietary habits, health history, and any medical conditions. Be open and honest – remember, the dietitian is there to help, not judge. Your dietitian will likely ask you about your lifestyle, including exercise, work, and sleep patterns, as all these factors play a role in your overall nutrition.
Ongoing Relationship with Your Dietitian
Establishing an ongoing relationship with your dietitian is incredibly beneficial. Nutrition isn’t just about making short-term changes; it’s about developing sustainable habits that support your long-term health. Regular check-ins with your dietitian can help you stay on track, adjust your plan as needed, and continue to make informed choices about your diet.
Online vs. In-Person Consultations
In today’s digital age, you can choose between online and in-person consultations with dietitians. Online consultations offer convenience and flexibility, especially if you have a busy schedule or if there aren’t many dietitians in your area. On the other hand, in-person consultations provide a more personal touch, allowing for a comprehensive assessment.
Brisbane Livewell Clinic offers both options, ensuring you receive the support you need in a way that suits you best.
Conclusion
Finding a dietitian is a crucial step towards better health and wellness. Whether you choose to find a dietitian privately or through your GP with a CDM Plan, ensure that the dietitian you select is qualified and understands your unique needs. Start your journey to better nutrition by finding the right dietitian today.
