Zinc Taste Test

The zinc taste test was developed by Dr. Bryce Smith of London as a way to evaluate zinc levels within the body. The test is based on the knowledge that the functions of taste and smell are dependent upon there being sufficient zinc available in the body. If zinc levels are too low, the sensation of taste will be diminished.

A zinc deficiency creates a vicious cycle as it prevents you from being able to absorb zinc in capsule and tablet forms. This is due to a defect in the mucosal absorption mechanisms, which are dependent on zinc. Liquid zinc, Dr. Smith found, is the only form of zinc that can bypass this intestinal blockage. This is now recognised as a reliable way to replenish zinc and to assess zinc status by virtue of the taste reflex.

The test involves holding a liquid solution in your mouth for around 10 seconds before swallowing it. Your sensation of taste is then compared with a series of defined standards to determine your zinc status.

Zinc is essential for the production of normal cells, especially immune cells, and is also involved in numerous enzyme functions in the body. Deficiency of this vital nutrient, which is extremely common, can have broad-ranging effects on the body, such as impeding immune function and slowing the elimination of chemicals and toxins.
